Social interactions, site attachment and group cohesion were studied in a free-living colony of Epomophorus fruit bats. Daily activities in an undisturbed colony were recorded. Special attention was paid to the peculiar calling behaviour of courting ♂♂ during the night. Structure and repetition rate of their sounds were analyzed in the laboratory. A special mode of acoustic interaction was found and related to the observed spacing out of calling ♂♂ By following feeding animals in the field and by analysis of their faeces we found that besides fruits they eat special leaves which afford steroidal sapogenins.  相似文献

Two α-amylase genes from the thermophilic alkaliphile Anaerobranca gottschalkii were cloned, and the corresponding enzymes, AmyA and AmyB, were investigated after purification of the recombinant proteins. Based on their amino acid sequences, AmyA is proposed to be a lipoprotein with extracellular localization and thus is exposed to the alkaline milieu, while AmyB apparently represents a cytoplasmic enzyme. The amino acid sequences of both enzymes bear high similarity to those of GHF13 proteins. The different cellular localizations of AmyA and AmyB are reflected in their physicochemical properties. The alkaline pH optimum (pH 8), as well as the broad pH range, of AmyA activity (more than 50% activity between pH 6 and pH 9.5) mirrors the conditions that are encountered by an extracellular enzyme exposed to the medium of A. gottschalkii, which grows between pH 6 and pH 10.5. AmyB, on the other hand, has a narrow pH range with a slightly acidic pH optimum at 6 to 6.5, which is presumably close to the pH in the cytoplasm. Also, the intracellular AmyB is less tolerant of high temperatures than the extracellular AmyA. While AmyA has a half-life of 48 h at 70°C, AmyB has a half-life of only about 10 min at that temperature, perhaps due to the lack of stabilizing constituents of the cytoplasm. AmyA and AmyB were very similar with respect to their substrate specificity profiles, clearly preferring amylose over amylopectin, pullulan, and glycogen. Both enzymes also hydrolyzed α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrin. Very interestingly, AmyA, but not AmyB, displayed high transglycosylation activity on maltooligosaccharides and also had significant β-cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) activity. CGTase activity has not been reported for typical α-amylases before. The mechanism of cyclodextrin formation by AmyA is unknown.  相似文献

Ostracods were found in two pieces of Baltic amber for the first time. The animals belong to the freshwater genus Cyclocypris. Since Baltic amber was formed during Eocene times in southern Scandinavia, the age of the specimens is estimated at 42–54 million years. As aquatic organisms, ostracods are seldom trapped in amber; it is considered that one specimen, already dead and dried, was either blown onto sticky resin on a plant stem, or washed there by a high flood level, while the other was probably splashed, alive, in a drop of water against the flowing resin, again probably during a flood. Associated faunal remains, including other crustaceans, suggest a coastal palaeoenvironment with some marine as well as freshwater influence.  相似文献

Dinaphthylmethylarsine complexes of palladium(II) and platinum(II) with the formulae [MX2L2] (M = Pd, Pt; L = di(1-naphthyl)methylarsine = Nap2AsMe and X = Cl, Br, I), [M2Cl2(μ-Cl)2L2], [PdCl(S2CNEt2)L], [Pd2Cl2(μ-OAc)2L2] and [MCl2(PR3)L] (PR3 = PEt3, PPr3, PBu3, PMePh2) have been prepared. These complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, Raman, NMR (1H, 13C, 31P) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The stereochemistry of the complexes has been deduced from the spectroscopic data. The crystal structures of trans-[PdCl2(PEt3)(Nap2AsMe)] and of [Pd(S2CNEt2)2], a follow-up product, were determined. The UV-vis spectra of [MX2L2] complexes show a red shift on going from X = Cl to X = I. The complexes [PdX2L2] and [PtX2L2] are strongly luminescent in fluid solution and in the solid at ambient temperature.  相似文献

Arthropod abundance has been hypothesized to be correlated with plant diversity but the results of previous studies have been equivocal. In contrast, plant productivity, vegetation structure, abiotic site conditions, and the physical disturbance of habitats, are factors that interact with plant diversity, and that have been shown to influence arthropod abundance. We studied the combined effect of plant species diversity, productivity and site characteristics on arthropod abundance in 71 managed grasslands in central Germany using multivariate statistics. For each site we determined plant species cover, plant community biomass (productivity), macro- and micronutrients in the soil, and characterized the location of sites with respect to orographic parameters as well as the current and historic management regimes. Arthropods were sampled using a suction sampler and classified a priori into functional groups (FGs). We found that arthropod abundance was not correlated with plant species richness, effective diversity or Camargo's evenness, even when influences of environmental variables were taken into account. In contrast, plant community composition was highly correlated with arthropod abundances. Plant community productivity influenced arthropod abundance but explained only a small proportion of the variance. The abundances of the different arthropod FGs were influenced differentially by agricultural management, soil characteristics, vegetation structure and by interactions between different FGs of arthropods. Herbivores, carnivores and detritivores reacted differently to variation in environmental variables in a manner consistent with their feeding mode. Our results show that in natural grassland systems arthropod abundance is not a simple function of plant species richness, and they emphasize the important role of plant community composition for the abundance patterns of the arthropod assemblages.  相似文献

In this study, the temporal shape of voice-induced nitric oxide (NO) signals in exhaled air has been investigated in eight healthy individuals by means of laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results of the experimental part have been compared with calculated signals obtained by using a simple one-compartment model of the paranasal sinuses. In the experimental part, a rapidly increasing NO concentration has been found when the subjects started humming. After reaching a maximum, the emission starts to decrease with the shape of an exponential decay and finally reaches a constant level. The time constant of this decay (NO washout) is 3.0 +/- 1.2 s. The peak height of the NO emission during humming increases when the time between two humming processes increases. When no voice-induced NO emission takes place, the NO concentration in the paranasal sinuses rebuilds again to a maximum concentration. The typical time constant for the NO recovery is 4.5 +/- 3.2 min. A three-compartment model defining exactly the geometry and anatomy of the paranasal sinuses has been developed that is based on three main assumptions of the NO dynamics: 1) constant NO production of the epithelium in the sinuses; 2) the rate of the chemical reaction of NO with the epithelium of the paranasal sinuses is proportional to the NO concentration; and 3) the emission of NO from the sinuses (volume/s) is proportional to the NO concentration. It is shown that the three-compartment model under the experimental conditions can be reduced to a one-compartment model, which describes the complete temporal behavior of the NO exchange.  相似文献

Calpains are a family of 14 intracellular calcium-dependent proteases, which have been implicated in cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to analyze specifically the expressional regulation of the different calpain isoforms in hypertensive target organ damage. Using real-time PCR, we found calpain 6 and 9 down-regulated by more than 50% and the endogenous calpain inhibitor calpastatin up-regulated by 225%, respectively, in the hearts of Dahl salt-sensitive rats on a high salt (4% NaCl) compared to normal salt diet. On the protein level, calpain 9 but not calpastatin was regulated in the hypertensive target organs heart and kidney. Moreover, the myocardial expression of calpain 9 protein was inversely linked to left ventricular mass (r= -0.93, p<0.01), and renal expression of calpain 9 protein correlated inversely with albuminuria (r= -0.82, p<0.05). In the aorta, there was no regulation of calpain 9 on the protein level. We conclude that differential regulation of calpain 9 may play a role in hypertensive target organ damage.  相似文献
